HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT CELEBRATES ITS DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY
60 YEARS OF FISHING IN KONA’S FAMOUS WATERS

In 1959, just days after the territory of Hawaii became the 50th state, a small group of local anglers assembled in Peter Fithian’s Kona Inn office to discuss launching a world-class sport fishing tournament. Henry Chee, the legendary Kona fisherman and IGFA Hall of Fame recipient was a part of this group. The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) launched its first big game fishing tournament in Kona, Hawaii and as they say, the rest is history.…. during that inaugural Tournament, George Wooller set a 80-pound-class world record with 444-pound Pacific blue marlin and Ala Moana Sportsman’s Club wins with 611-pound blue on 130-pound line.

Once again, the world meets here in Kona this summer where the tradition of big Marlin fishing aboard some of Kona’s finest fishing fleet, captains and crews continues. Returning teams, new anglers and a continued commitment to further world-wide attention on fish conservation through its successful tag and release program are just some of the expected returns as thirty-five teams gather from around the world to celebrate HIBT’s diamond milestone. So far the 2019 HIBT scoreboard includes teams from Australia, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, and representing teams from around the US including California, Hawaii, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oregon and Texas. HIBT salutes all the anglers and charter boat captains and crews who have brought their best talent and enthusiasm.

The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is supported by the generosity of Hawaii Tourism and numerous community donors who contribute time and resources
