Explore the Stars at AstroDay in Kona @ Kona Commons Shopping Center

Keiki and their families are invited to reach for the stars at the AstroDay celebration, Sunday, November 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Kona Commons Shopping Center in Kailua-Kona.

Organized by the Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC), this free, open-air event is an entertaining and star-studded opportunity for the community to learn about the science of astronomy and the incredible discoveries being made by the telescopes on Maunakea. The Maunakea Observatories and other science-based and community organizations will offer colorful and informative “contact-less” science exhibitions, demonstrations, and activities. Free science kits will be available to take home while supplies last and the UH Institute for Astronomy will have a solar telescope on site to project views of the sun. Prize giveaways and a Scavenger Hunt are planned.

The Maunakea Observatoriesʻ Subaru Telescope, TMT International Observatory, Gemini Observatory, Canada France Hawai`i Telescope, East Asian Observatory/JCMT, University of Hawai`i Institute for Astronomy, and the W.M. Keck Observatory will participate, as well as the NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, Las Cumbres Observatory and Pan-STARRS from Haleakalā. Onizuka Space Science Program, Center for Maunakea Stewardship, Hawai`i Science & Technology Museum, Hawaiian Electric, the `Imiloa Astronomy Center, International Lunar Observatory Association, UH Hilo Astrophysics Club, and the Thelma Parker Memorial Public & School Library will also be on hand with displays and activities.

All COVID-19 protocols will be observed, including face mask wearing, hand sanitization and social distancing. Kona Commons and event participants appreciate your kokua.
